Let’s talk about challenging your ‘comfortable norm’. One client came to me who was on a handsome salary in her job and had earned a well respected position in her career. She’d worked hard to reach that point as a consultant and was living really comfortably on that level of income. BUT!! She wasn’t happy. As much as we think we can ‘grin and bear it’ for the money, our working life takes up so much of our energy and waking hours… so if you’re not happy and internally reluctant, it makes everything a grind. No amount of compensation can outweigh the cost of your happiness and health. I know this feeling too. I love teaching, but I knew that my job as a deputy head at a really busy secondary school wouldn’t allow me the time and energy I wanted to have for my family. I was pregnant with my first child and knew that my work life wasn’t going to match what I wanted. When we’re faced with this reality, we can spend a long time talking ourselves back around to it. We think, ‘it’s just a busy season’, ‘it’ll change when…’, ‘I’m probably being grumpy or ungrateful’. It’s important to address those thoughts too - they can be valid!! But when you have a persistent feeling that your life isn’t aligned with what you love and what lights you up, it’s worth paying attention. Do you really know what you want? It should be a relatively simple question but a lot of people really grapple with it. Sometimes it’s indecision: you don’t want to close ANY doors or lose anything, and therefore don’t make any proper choices. Sometimes there’s lack of clarity because you’ve pursued what you *thought* you wanted for so long, and only now find that it’s not... My job as a coach is helping you extract real clarity around what you want to achieve. For some clients they want to build a business that affords a beautiful office complex and a dynamic, busy schedule of travel and events. For one of my clients, she didn’t want to make more than £80k per year because she just wanted to maintain that level until retirement. Some clients, like myself, want to build a work life around their family. As a mum, I want to have time with my daughters, I knew this even before I had my first child and I knew that my job as a deputy head wouldn’t give me the space I needed. Anyone else love festivals? I do think it's a British thing! For as long as I can remember the summer meant festivals Hippy solstice parties with my parents friends as a kid Fetes and fairs in the village I grew up in Later on music festivals: Phoenix (where I survived on free Doritos!) glasto and later secret garden, wilderness, bestival.. now camp bestival ! Day festivals, local mini festivals in the park next to my house 🏡 Two of my best friends used to have a festival every year for their bday.. Now. 2020 has been a year of 0 festivals. I might look happy.. Instead I feel angry 😡 And here is the thing over the last couple of months I am hearing more and more stories about "coaches" And you dig and you listen 👂 And you realise: they aren't coaches they don't have any qualifications or training, they aren't members of professional bodies or adhere to ethical guidelines It seems they don't even have contracts with clients or insurance in some cases. Coaching is currently an unregulated industry.. The internet means there are low barriers to entry. Many excellent experienced business owners call themselves marketing coaches for example and mentor / consult clients. Some people enter the industry with no prior experience and no training and then work with clients.. Of course some may be great. Often they aren't. Ethical codes, contracts, terms of service,insurance are there to protect everyone. Training to me is a sign you are serious about what you do and your clients. Coaching can be truly life changing. I believe it needs to become a regulated industry - what do you think ?

Coaching is where we dance in the moment with our clients and are curious to all that they bring. It is not only a truly powerful intervention it gives people confidence, clarity and helps them build their self trust. I absolutely love how it brings about lasting transformational change and this is why I took the decision in 2019 to train coaches. I'm @jochocpr and I’m here today to share some thoughts with you about being visible in the press as chatting to Ruth this week we both got super animated - and frustrated - about the fact there are still sooooo many incredible female entrepreneurs hiding their light....and we want to change this!

What we've heard a lot of is:"I can't do PR" "I'm not ready to be in the media" "PR is for when I'm more established" "I'm no expert" "I've got nothing to share of interest to the media"
.
We’re calling time on these limiting beliefs! - because the more you feed them the more powerful they become!If you're a coach you are going to be changing lives - wouldn't you like to change more lives? Have you learnt stuff along your challenging life journey that could help others? Then this needs to be shared!So let's address some of those blocks that are putting barriers up around getting visible in the media.

“I can't do PR" - Yes you CAN - and you can do it yourself, you just need to understand how it works and nail some PR foundations so you’re not stabbing in the dark
.
“PR is for when I'm more established" "I'm not ready to be in the media" -But you ARE. If you're in business you’re ready to be in the media, it doesn't matter if your business is 1 week old or 1 year old - what matters is the big idea you want to share. Feeling media ready comes down to nailing your mission in a press friendly way and building up confidence in communicating with the press

"I'm no expert" "I've got nothing to share of interest" - This one really gets me as clearly you ARE an expert as you are serving your clients. You don't need global domination to share your voice, you just need to really want to get that message out!

These beliefs are basically all mind monkey excuses keeping you in your comfort zone! So our message today to you is this - PR CAN be for you - if you’re on a real mission to make impact…so please don’t let your mind tell you otherwise x

I recorded a podcast yesterday called the dark side of the coaching industry..
And I feel another one may come out. The more I hear about people teaching to go into other people's groups and audiences and to then friend and message those who are engaged and sell to them the more I wonder wtaf... I can't imagine McDonalds teaching their staff to go into Burger King and speak to all of the people waiting to get a burger OR Virgin staff buying the data of British Airways staff and then selling them cheaper flights. It is unethical at best and this kind of underhand tactic may work short term it doesn't work long term. What I find hard to get my head round is why would you want to learn from someone who does this? Maybe I am old school in my views in that the way I do business (and the way I think businesses operate) is that you build your audience and build relationships with them so they know you, like you and trust you and then you sell them offers which they want and that help them get results..

“I’m not good at tennis” = A Ruth Kudzi fixed mindset statement Have I ever tried to get good at tennis? Have I ever asked for feedback or coaching? NO!! So the truth is, I’m not good at tennis right now, but I could be if I invested time into it and sought training. THAT’S the growth mindset outlook. As a deputy head at a school I saw the fixed mindset in action - students that knew they were an ‘A Student’ took that label and put their trust in that alone, but perhaps didn’t do the work. Similarly, students who were getting lower grades would resign themselves to a fate of bad results because they saw that as their identity. It’s not necessarily a conscious decision, it’s a mindset. We can change things when we have a growth mindset. It means we stay open to improving and developing and not using “that’s just who I am” as an excuse not to change. A book I love and highly recommend on this subject is Dr Joe Dispenza’s ‘Breaking The Habit Of Being Yourself’ - it even convinced me on the Scientific benefits of doing meditation - and that’s saying something! Have you read this book? What are you reading or consuming right now?

My first introduction to coaching came about when I went on a leadership course as a teacher - after discovering that, actually, I was a bad manager! I really loved it and it led to me training as a coach myself, alongside my job as a deputy head at the time. Are you flourishing? With what has unfolded in 2020 this is more releavant than ever! When we take a scientific perspective around flourishing there are 5 key elements (Seligman) which make up the PERMA model, I find it intersting to look and reflect on these in my journalling, the core elements and some questions for you: - Positive emotions: are we feeling them? are we creating them? where do they come from? how often are we happy / grateful / satisfied with our lives? - Engagement: with our lives and what we are doing; when do we feel present and engaged? what do we love doing? when are we in that flow state? - Relationships: our links with others, are we feeling nourished and suppported? - Meaning: our sense of purpose and belonging as well as serving something higher than yourself. Do we feel like we are acting in purpose? can we connect to something bigger? - Accomplishment: moving towards goal mastery, success and achievement. Do we feel we are moving forward? are we making progress? I love this exercise because it highlights where I need to focus in my life: I have found in 2020 the relationships area has changed and this has definately impacted my overall flourishing levels as I have missed those closer in person connections. At times I have also struggled with engagement as my thoughts have been consumed by what has been going on; I know enough to recognise when this is the case that taking a step back and spending time with those who I love and doing things like exercising really helps as it helps me to connect to my positive emotions. Where do you focus on in this model?

Intuition is based on pattern recognition of past behaviour. If you’re a grand chess master, you’ll have developed very very reliable subconscious pattern recognition in the game. But most of us aren’t chess masters, and life isn’t as neat as a chequered board! That means that our pattern recognition, based on our past experience might have limited use in a present setting. So when you have a ‘gut reaction’ I urge you to do these 3 things to interrogate the feeling: Ask yourself what evidence there is to support this feeling
Ask yourself what evidence there is to the contrary of your gut reaction
Ask yourself: ‘When I had this feeling before, what was going on - what does this remind me of?’ Once you’ve examined the feeling properly you can see whether it’s a subconscious bias or whether it is in fact a red flag. If it’s a red flag and you’ve picked up negative energy from somewhere, you know you should tread carefully. Gut feelings shouldn’t be ignored, but I always recommend they are interrogated. Today I was determined to do my full morning routine Yoga 🧘‍♀️ Reading - 20 pages of Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself and Positive Psychlogy and The Body; the Somatopsychic Side to Flourishing (both for the second time) Meditation 🧘‍♂️ : I cracked! I managed 10 minutes (defo wip with this) Planning and goal setting for the week I had fallen out of a routine so getting back in has been great! Feeling more energised already plus re-reading these books 📚 has given me ideas for some new resources for my coach training ! What's your morning routine like?
