Interview with a career change mum – Nicola Rae-Wickham

Today I interview Nicola who has created the brilliant business – A life more inspired. Nicola is your go to person for beautiful affirmation cards and is a qualified life coach.

1.     What gave you the idea to start up your business?

I always wanted to have my own thing and work for myself but I didn’t know where to start and was lacking in confidence. Having my daughter released this incredible feeling of limitless possibilities. My newfound confidence coupled with a compelling reason to design my life, I set about doing just that. It instigated a personal development journey which saw me falling love with holistic tools and techniques and all things woo woo. This then grew into my passion to help other women do the same and my brand, A Life More Inspired, was born. I then did my NLP Life coach training so added coaching to the offering, alongside brand/marketing styling and an online shop selling affirmation cards and other inspirational merchandise.

2.     What did you do to prepare to start up your business?

I started by creating a brand and an audience. I did lots of research and I drew on all my tools like meditation, journaling and affirmations to do the inner work to build the momentum. I also joined a Mastermind and had a coach. I have a 15-year career in marketing behind me, so I of course drew on those skills as well.

3.     Which aspects of your business did you need help with? Where did you get that help?

I needed help with the structure of the business and I found that in my coach, she was a great sounding board for all of my ideas. When I started, my daughter was only 18 months old and I had a corporate job, my coach’s help in allowing me to make progress without getting overwhelmed was invaluable.

4.     Describe what your business does and who you target it at / your ideal client

My business is called A Life More Inspired and I help busy women re-connect with themselves in order cultivate everyday joy and go from dreaming about the ‘thing’ they want to do, to actually doing it.  Through coaching, community and merchandise I help open hearted women take the small steps that lead to the big life changes.

I have marketing background with a career spanning 15 years, so I now couple the life coaching with helping business owners to style their brand and find their voice. Helping them to navigate the marketing maze so that it doesn’t end up taking over their lives and they can achieve the life and business blend they desire.

5.     What is the most rewarding thing about having your own business?

It is the freedom to nurture my own desires whilst being able to nurture my family and be present for them. I find it incredibly rewarding that I am able to make an impact and change lives. Whether it be through introducing a woman to my affirmation cards, which then lead her to develop a positive daily practice to actually digging deep 1-2-1 with a client and her creating the kind of life she had previously only dreamt of. I feel blessed that this is my job.

6.     What has been the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge has been having to be everything. I have been in the corporate world for over 15 years and I was used to having someone to do manage the accounts, the inventory and the legal requirements, but with having my own business, it comes down to me and I am not at the stage of outsourcing all of those things…yet. Also, although I love working from home, I did miss the water cooler moments. This lead to me creating a group for female entrepreneurs where I live in Ealing. This group has been great, as I get to meet-up with like-minded women, face-to-face and on my doorstep. I also joined other online communities with supportive, inspirational women and that also helped.

7.     If you could go back and give yourself some advice what would it be?

I would tell myself to stop overthinking it and trust my intuition more.
