Interview with a career change mum – Maxine KerleyMarch 2, 2017
This week I interview the lovely and brilliant Maxine who started up her own business Digital Bon Bons on New Years Eve. I was lucky enough to meet Maxine at a recent networking event and am really impressed with her business, someone I will certainly be using in the future.
Maxine's bio: I have over 7 years experience in Digital Marketing, starting when the boom for businesses to really up their game began. It's a real passion of I bordering on geekdom I think. I've worked in a number of industries from fashion to utilities and now I want to use my expertise to help fellow parent business owners. I'm mum to Ava who's 3 and live in Kent with my husband and our cat Betsie.
1) What gave you the idea to start up your business?
Digital Marketing is a passion of mine and since becoming a mum my interests in everything and anything that related to children, be it classes, clothing, birthing techniques, toys etc grew. Following business on Facebook, Instagram etc I could see how hard it is for small business owners to understand the fast moving world of digital. A lot of parents want to launch or launch their own business but don’t know about websites, how to build them effectively, how to get found in search results or building a social following, handling social customer services etc. It then just hit me, I knew I wanted to offer my expertise to parents who run their own business.
2) What did you do to prepare to start up your business?
I researched. I researched into whether there is a true need for a niche business approach like this and what services would people benefit from the most. Once I knew this I spent time preparing the business itself. I looked into potential competitors, pricing, service level and my company values and ethos – that’s all before I thought about logo, branding and design..
3) Which aspects of your business did you need help with? Where did you get that help?
The branding side because that is not my strongest area. I have a friend who runs two businesses and she is a true inspiration and having someone so dear to me who has done this is fantastic. She is always there for me with advice, tips and hugs if needed. Branding is her forte so she was brilliant for guidance on the approach to thinking of the business as a brand.
4) Describe what your business does and who you target it at / your ideal client
Digital Bon Bons offers digital marketing services – website design & build, social media, email marketing to parent business owners. If they have a business targeted towards children and fellow parents and are drowning in getting to grips with the digital world we exist in now for business – I want to help. I like to learn from my clients what their challenges are, what their goals are and through digital provide the solutions they need to really soar. I wanted my client base to be niche and because I am naturally passionate about being a parent, supporting other parents, I choose to target parent business owners.
5) What is the most rewarding thing about having your own business?
So much. Talking and building relationships with clients and potential clients. It’s brilliant to be in this community of business owners so passionate about what they do and you feel that passion and what to do the best service possible for them.
The fact I’ve done it – I’ve taken that leap and decided to do something for myself, own something myself and be the leader in that – it’s incredibly rewarding considering I suffered so much over the years of talking myself out of things through lack of confidence.
6) What has been the biggest challenge?
Time Management so far. I’m wearing a few hats at the moment, like many people who launch their own business so making sure I balance my time is key.
7) If you could go back and give yourself some advise what would it be?
Do it earlier, don’t be scared.
